A cargo trailer can’t literally pull its own weight, but they definitely do the heavy lifting when it comes to transporting heavy materials, tools, or other items you need on your job. Return the favor from time to time by making sure your trailer is in good condition so you know it’ll stick with you for years to come.

To help you out, we here at Double B Trailer Sales have put together some maintenance tips. If you want more advice, or you’re just looking for a new cargo trailer to take care of, stop by either of our stores today! As your favorite trailer dealer Salt Lake City and St. George, Utah, we know a thing or two about how to take care of these vital tools.

Step 1: Owner’s Manual

Your first step in any maintenance process is to check your owner’s manual, if you have one. We’ve gathered general information that can apply to most cargo trailers for this handy maintenance guide, but your owner’s manual is specially crafted to work for your product. It may include recommended materials and products, a maintenance schedule, and other information specific to your cargo trailer. If you can’t find your owner’s manual, check the manufacturer’s website for a downloadable copy.

Tires

Your cargo trailer is going to be loaded up with heavy gear and debris pretty regularly, so it’s important to make sure the wheels are in good shape. We recommend you inspect your tires before any and every trip, even if it’s just a cursory examination. Look for signs of damage to the sidewall, check the tread to ensure it’s still in good shape, and make sure the tires have the proper air pressure. Double-check on any tires that seem a bit off with a tire pressure gauge to check for too much or too little air pressure, then adjust it to the recommended levels in your owner’s manual. The tread will eventually wear out, no matter what, so be prepared to replace them when the time comes.

Deck

Your cargo trailer also relies heavily on its deck. Generally speaking, the best way to maintain it is to clean it regularly, but different cargo trailers utilize different materials for the deck. Some of these materials will require extra protection from the elements. A wooden deck, for instance, should be stained regularly to keep the wood from rotting or absorbing too much moisture. Metal decks might accumulate rust or other oxidization. Another brief visual inspection should show you any serious indicators of trouble or damage, and doing so regularly can save a lot of effort and money down the road.

Test Basic Functions

Double check any and all moving parts and electronics on your cargo trailer before driving off with it to make sure everything is working properly. This may cost you a few minutes, but that’s a lot cheaper than paying for an accident or replacement parts. Test your brakes and other lights to make sure they’re in good working condition, then check the breakaway switch and battery to make sure they’re up to the trip. Make sure all lug nuts are tightened and have no rust buildup.

Distribute your cargo across the deck as evenly as you possibly can. Placing too much weight in a single area can affect your tow vehicle and can cause your cargo trailer’s tires to wear down unevenly. It may also cause your trailer to buckle, even if it’s brand new and sturdy. A load distribution hitch can help you automatically level your trailer, but a brief examination before you take off should be enough.

Regular Service

No matter how much care you’re putting into your cargo trailer, it’s still important to take it in to a professional mechanic or technician regularly. They’ll do a more thorough check on all parts and systems to make sure every inch of your trailer is up to the task. Bring your cargo trailer in for a check-up at least once a year, ideally once every six months. That way you and those around you will be as safe as possible, and your trailer will last as long as it can!
